The Spongegar meme template is the name given to the prehistoric ancestors of SpongeBob Squarepants in the television series SpongeBob Squarepants. A still image of the prehistoric character Primate Sponge, wearing a pretty angry expression, has been used extensively over the internet on Black Twitter and 4chan, among many other platforms.
The meme originates from an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants in December of 1999. This was when a primitive version of SpongeBob was shown with long canines, wearing a loincloth. The first signs of Spongegar as a meme date back to 2007, when a page for him was launched on Spongepedia wiki. Videos mocking Spongegar were soon launched and the picture became an official meme by 2016.
The meme is meant to depict a sudden and stupid reaction to something that bothers you.
